The Pleasure and Pain of Weight Loss

What is the biggest road block to your weight loss? Junk Food, but what is “Junk Food” and how does it affect weight loss and weight gain. Junk food can be described as any food that is deficient in nutrients and fiber. These foods are invariably high in calories as well. A lot of times people blame weight gain on bad genetics, bad genetics can hinder you from losing weight but here are a few facts that you might find interesting.

  • People who’s parents are obese have a tenfold increased risk of being obese
  • Obese families also are more likely to have obese pets…..this is not genetic

So weight gain is a mix of food choices, genetics and inactivity. Blaming your genes will not change them so complaining about them doesn’t do much good.

In our fast food instant access society we are taught to look for quick fixes and miracle pills. And not time tested solutions to problems and nowhere is this more obvious than in the weight loss industry.

You cannot cheat the system when it comes to weight loss, just like on the farm when you plant corn you would not come back a week after planting expecting a harvest. That’s just not how it works. It is the same with weight loss and any miracle pill or 30 day program claiming to change your life will not, although it may jump start your weight loss and get you going, the truth is studies show that of 95% of people who lose weight this way gain it and more back.

This is why more and more people are turning to things like gastric bypass and other surgical procedures to help them lose weight. Here are some interesting facts about gastric bypass from the National Institute of Health

  • Wound problems and blood clots are common side effects
  • Substantial nutritional and metabolic complications, gastritis, esophagitis, outlet stenosis, and abdominal hernias are common
  • More than 10% of patients required another operation to fix problems resulting from the first surgery

Truth is weight gain and weight loss can be distilled down to two things.

#1 – It’s not how much you eat but what you eat. Eating a lot of the right foods is the key to weight loss success. It is not that most people eat to much of a quantity of food it is that what they do eat is empty calories deficient of any nutritional value.

#2 –Exercise For weight loss and overall health and fitness. You need to do aerobic as well as anaerobic exercise 3-5 days a week.

Studies have shown that physical activity is the strongest determinant of total body and central abdominal fat mass. If you are looking for a gym Des Moines, a few questions you need to ask are; do they have a plan to help me drop lbs. and can I stick with it? And are the trainers qualified?

In addition studies have shown that if you hate working out invariably you can only force yourself to do something you hate for a short period of time. To really stick with something studies show you have to look forward to doing it and enjoy the process.

You might ask how can I actually look forward to going to the gym and enduring all that pain? You have got to focus on the pleasure you will get from the workout, you have to look for ways to make it fun. Make friends with other people at the gym, listen to music that motivates you. Remember to laugh and have a good time while you are at the gym. Most importantly though keep your focus on the pleasure and health you are going to get from the pain you go through in a hard workout.

That’s it for today thank you for taking the time to read this and remember to focus on the pleasure of working out and not all the pain!
